What is a Pegan Diet?

The pegan diet takes important ideas from both paleo and vegan diets. It focuses on the idea that eating whole, nutrient-rich foods can help lower inflammation, keep blood sugar levels balanced, and promote good health.

If you think that combining paleo and vegan sounds complicated, you’re not alone. Even though it has a unique name, the pegan diet has its own rules and is actually less strict than following either the paleo or vegan diet alone.

The diet mainly emphasizes eating lots of vegetables and fruits, but it also allows small to moderate amounts of meat, certain fish, nuts, seeds, and some legumes. It’s best to avoid heavily processed sugars, oils, and grains, but a little bit is okay.

How Healthy is the Pegan Diet?

The pegan diet is mostly similar to the paleo diet, but opinions on its healthiness vary. The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) provides a detailed look at the pros and cons of the paleo diet.

According to HSPH, the benefits mainly come from eating fresh, nutrient-rich foods and steering clear of processed items. Some studies mentioned show that a paleo diet can help lower body fat, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce cholesterol levels.

On the downside, paleo eaters often consume unhealthy animal products, which is less of an issue in the pegan diet. However, cutting out dairy, legumes, and whole grains can lead to nutrient deficiencies if you strictly follow the pegan guidelines.

Moreover, the science behind the paleo diet is debated. It assumes our bodies are still suited to the foods eaten in the Stone Age and can’t handle agricultural products like milk or grains. However, there’s no proof that our genes haven’t changed since then, and people in different regions consumed various foods.

Note: If you plan to follow a strict pegan diet or a vegan pegan diet, get your blood levels checked regularly to avoid nutrient deficiencies (like  iodine, iron, B vitamins, zinc, or calcium). It’s a good idea to consult a dietitian before starting a strict pegan diet.
