Let’s face it, everyone wants that radiating, sun-kissed glowing skin that looks like you’ve just come back from a vacation. But when we live in a world full of pollutants, toxins, chemicals, and everything else, it can be difficult to maintain that smooth, flawless complexion.

What if there were ways you could get that glow without breaking the bank on skin treatments or vacations?

Now you can. Here are 7 tips to help you out:

  1. Go paleo

When you remove sugar, processed and packaged foods, additives, and any unnecessary ingredients from your food, you’re giving your body pure, wholesome ingredients that it can thrive with. Not only are you increasing your nutrient intake drastically, but you’re also decreasing the toxic load on your body.

The skin is your largest organ, and besides functioning as a barrier and protective mechanism, it also plays a role in detoxification. In an effort to rid the body of ingested chemicals and toxins, it pushes some of them out through the skin, which can cause conditions like psoriasis, acne, and eczema.

However, as  paleo operates on a no processed food principle, our skin becomes clearer and starts to take on the glow that it was meant to have.

  1. Use natural skincare products

Just like foods can cause a reaction in the body, skincare products loaded with chemicals and toxins can do the same. Many people don’t think twice about what they put on their skin because it’s just ‘external’, but the skin actually absorbs a large portion of what we put on it, which is why it’s crucial to use natural skincare products.

  1. Add collagen to your diet

Collagen is all the rage in the health world and there’s a reason for it. As a critical component to joints and tendons, organs, bones, and muscles, it plays a major structural role. But it’s also a critical component to skin. As we age, we start to lose elasticity in the skin, which contributes to the appearance of sagging skin, wrinkles, and age lines.

Adding collagen into your diet regularly helps to increase elasticity of the skin, giving you brighter, more youthful looking skin for years to come.

  1. Get rid of your stress

Have you ever heard someone mention “worry lines”? Wrinkles and fine lines are one of the biggest markers of stress and one of the easiest ways to prevent glowing skin.

We know it’s unrealistic to say that you should get rid of all of your stress, but there are certain things you can incorporate into your daily routine to reduce and manage your stress levels. Simple things like daily meditation, gratitude journaling, exercise, and essential oils can all help to calm the body and reduce the negative effects of stress.

  1. Sweat it out in the sauna

As we mentioned, our skin is the largest organ we have and is a critical component of detoxification. When we raise our body temperature, either via a sauna, exercise, or the sun, the body starts to release water in the form of sweat.

Any high temperatures will stimulate sweat-induced excretion of toxins, drugs, medications and other chemicals stored in the body. In doing so, it also promotes a clearer, more radiating appearance of the skin.

  1. Stay hydrated

If you’ve ever been dehydrated or stayed in cold temperature for a lengthy period of time, you’ve probably noticed your skin starts to dry out and can take on an ‘ashy’ look to it, which doesn’t exactly give you that glowing effect.

To avoid this, ensure you’re getting enough water throughout your day. Not only does proper hydration ensure good skin, but it’s also critical to proper function of nearly every system in the body.

  1. Try fasting

Fasting is an easy and great way to renew and rejuvenate the body. Whether you participate in regular intermittent fasting or do 3-5 day fasts at a time, the benefits are quite substantial. One of the main advantages to fasting is the initiation of autophagy — our body’s mechanism of self-cleaning to remove dead or unwanted cells and allow for new growth, including growth of skin cells.

But fasting isn’t just good for cleaning up the body. Check out this article on why you shouldn’t fear fasting to discover all of the other benefits.
