Breeanna Verna, a registered dietician, massage therapist, personal trainer, and also holding a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Nutrition, seems to be a jack of all trades in the health and wellness arena.
Growing up as a competitive figure skater, Breeanna was always cognizant of her weight. At the young age of 10, she would eat yogurt for lunch and restrict herself from any normal “kid foods.” As a result of severe restriction and an unsustainable approach to eating, binging on all the foods was what came next.
Breeanna’s high school years were where she first started learning the basics of nutrition — how to read labels, good and not so good carbohydrates, and understanding the basics of good food choices. With the knowledge she’d learned, she started changing the way her family grocery shopped. And while they weren’t inherently what we’d call “good choices” now a days, it was her entrance into the world of nutrition and dietetics.
After starting college for massage therapy, Breeanna dreaded what everyone calls the “freshman 15”, so she joined the local fitness centre. She started Zumba classes, weight lifting 3-4 days per week, and learning her way around the gym. As diet plays an important role in weight loss, she started tracking every calorie and opting for the low-calorie and fat-free foods when shopping. The result? About 10-15 pounds lost, but constant fatigue and hunger.
The paleo diet came about after speaking with her roommate who mentioned the diet. Shortly after, Breeanna dove straight into the Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain and went head first into the lifestyle. After experimenting with her eating, Breeanna learned that paleo doesn’t have to be restrictive and you can adhere to the 90/10 rule so social gatherings aren’t something to dread.
Breeanna’s health and wellness journey is never linear and is constantly evolving. She’s been through ups and downs over the past few years, most recently being diagnosed with severe food allergies and digestive issues. Through this journey, Breeanna has learned that diet can truly be medicine. Despite going through a number of physical and mental obstacles, they have only made her into a stronger more compassionate dietician and have allowed her to help others struggling with their health.
